ON

“TRAFFIC AND ROAD SAFETY FOR TWO-WHEELER DRIVERS IN DELHI AND HYDERABAD”

INTRODUCTION

Bussan Auto Finance India Private Limited (BAF India) operates as a non-banking finance company. The Company offers automotive finance and insurance services for two-wheeler vehicles. It was established with a view to enrich the lifestyle of Indian society through customer-friendly and quality financial services and to become the most preferred financier for customers and dealers of Yamaha two-wheelers across India, setting a benchmark in the industry.


Safety and security of citizens on the roads is a major issue in India, specifically in Indian Metro Cities like Delhi and Hyderabad. The number of road-accidents in Delhi and Hyderabad in year 2018 was: 7435 and 2540 respectively.


ACORDASIA has been working in the CSR domain areas since 1983, as a registered not-for-profit Society. ACORDASIA is also a partner (for CSR) with Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (IICA) established by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Govt. of India, and is listed by them as an APPROVED IMPLEMENTING AGENCY. It has a long and extensive result-oriented experience in various CSR areas ( as listed in the Schedule VII of the Companies Act, 2013)


It is in this background that BAF India, as part of its CSR initiative, decided to conduct a CSR Project, with the focus on “Traffic and Road Safety for Two-Wheeler Drivers ” in Delhi and Hyderabad, in a ‘Campaign Mode’, as part of its CSR initiative, in collaboration with, and through ACORDASIA for the year 2019-2020.


OBJECTIVE

The main objective of this Campaign was to address the following underlying factors which contribute to risky road behavior, and accidents involving two-wheeler drivers:

a) Their beliefs (fatalism/ “karma” / destiny)
b) Their attitudes (“macho” / “Jugaad”)
c) Their knowledge (“lack of road safety rules / knowledge” / “vehicle maintenance”)
d) The behaviour of the Vehicle drivers (“heroic” / nothing can happen to me”)


GEOGRAPHICAL AREAS

The CSR Road Safety Awareness Programme was sanctioned to be conducted in the following geographical areas :

  • Delhi and NCR (Noida & Gurugram)
  • Hyderabad

METHODOLOGY

In order to meet the above objective, it was agreed to conduct various participatory, group field- activities, to create awareness among public regarding road safety, specially for two-wheeler drivers, including various Audio-Visual methods along with other techniques to create participatory environment for learning about safety from road accidents. (Lectures, and presentations do not help in changing attitudes and behavior.)

The various activities that were conducted during the Road Safety Awareness Programmes to create awareness on preventive actions on road accidents were the following:


1. Street Plays on Traffic and Road Safety
2. Slogan competitions on Road safety
3. Quiz Competitions on Road safety
4. “Focus Group Discussions” (FGD) on Traffic & Road Safety (with 10-12 Two-wheeler drivers in each FGD)
5. Leaflet distributions through various Newspapers (with messages on road safety and maintenance of two-wheeler vehicles )
6. Public awareness through Santa Claus, holding Placards with Road Safety messages


The following audio-visual materials were developed and used during the above activities

a) One Audio Quiz (in Hindi and Telugu languages)
b) Printed Question-Sheets for Quiz , and printed Quiz Questions with Answer Sheets (in both Hindi and Telugu languages)
c) Two Slogans/Audio-Spots (both in Hindi and Telugu languages)
d) “Standees” to be used at the activities points (in Hindi, English and Telugu languages)
e) Placards with Road Safety Awareness Messages (in Hindi, English & Telugu languages)
f) Banners to be used at the activities points (in Hindi, English and Telugu languages)
g) Coloured Leaflets (for distribution through Newspapers (in Hindi, English and Telugu languages)


All the project implementation activities under this CSR Road Safety Awareness Programme were documented by:

(1) A 5-minute Video Documentation Film, covering all the Road Safety Awareness Programmes under this CSR project, conducted in Delhi & NCR;
(2) A 3-Minute Video Documentation Film including the Road Safety Awareness Programmes under this CSR project, conducted in Hyderabad, with English Sub-titles;
(3) Still Photography (of all the activities undertaken in Delhi-NCR, and Hyderabad)


TIME FRAME

The CSR Road Safety Project was sanctioned for a period of Six months from the date of its start of execution. The MoU between Bussan Auto Finance India Pvt. Ltd. (BAF-India) and Asian Centre For Organisation Research And Development (ACORDASIA) was signed on 11th November, 2019, and the first Installment of the CSR Project Donation was received from BAF-India on 19th November, 2019. ACORDASIA successfully completed all the field-level activities under this CSR project on 19th March, 2020, despite number of challenges in the way, due to certain unavoidable circumstances, such as heavy rains; social disturbances due to public protests, Dharna’s and Curfews, especially during January, February and March, 2020.


STEPS

(Some of the steps were taken simultaneously):


1) Written Sanction/approval of the CSR Traffic and Road Safety Project by BAF India.
2) Identification of the specialized groups/professionals, and volunteers for conducting Street Plays, Focus Group Discussions, Printing of audio-visual materials, Leaflet Distributions, Video Documentation, Still Photography, etc.
3) Identification of localities in the selected areas. In Delhi-NCR and Hyderabad for Street Plays, FGDs and Leaflets distribution.
4) Developments/modification and recording of Audio-Visual Aids (Quiz, Slogans, etc.)
5) Development and Printing of Backdrops, Banners, & Standees, Placards, Quiz Questions & Answer Sheets, etc. after taking approval from BAF India.
6) Development of the Script of Street Play.
7) Field-testing of the Street Play, and accordingly modifying and finalization of Street Play.
8) Development and Printing of the Coloured Leaflets, in Hindi, English and Telugu, after taking approval from BAF India
9) Preparation of Guideline-points for Focus Group Discussions.
10) Overall planning and designing for implementation of the CSR Project in consultation with BAF India
11) Meetings with the Implementation teams for planning and designing of the various field level CSR activities .
12) Training of Implementing Team, and the Volunteers.
13) Taking permissions from the relevant Authorities for conducting the Street Plays and Focus Groups Discussions in public areas.
14) Purchasing of the token prizes for the winners of the Quiz Competitions and Slogan Competitions.
15) Purchasing of Santa Claus Costumes
16) Purchasing of PA System (Speakers and Mikes) for communicating with the public during the various awareness activities.
17) Implementation of the CSR project activities as planned.
18) Documentation of the project (video-documentation of the activities, apart from Still Photography.)
19) CSR Project Report of the implemented activities.


IMPLEMENTATION OF CSR TRAFFIC AND ROAD SAFETY PROJECT ACTIVITIES:

The various activities conducted under the BAF-India CSR Project on “Traffic and Road Safety for Two-Wheeler Drivers” in Delhi-NCR and Hyderabad, are hereby reported in Three Parts:

PART – I : Activities conducted under CSR Public Awareness Programme on “Traffic and Road Safety for Two-Wheeler Drivers, in Delhi-NCR; and

PART – II : Activities conducted under CSR Public Awareness Programme on “Traffic and Road Safety for Two-Wheeler Drivers, in Hyderabad.

PART – III : One copy of each of all the project materials, developed and used during the Project activities are hereby submitted at the end of the Report as Annexures.


In addition, the following documents are also being submitted separately as part of the documentary evidence of the work done in this CSR Traffic and Road Safety project :

“Traffic and Road Safety for Two-Wheeler Drivers”

In Delhi-NCR


In Delhi-NCR (Noida and Gurugram), as per the Project Agreement, the following activities were conducted under this project, during the Project period (from November 2019 to March, 2020) :


I. FOCUS GROUP DISCUSSIIONS (FGDs)


A total of 50 Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with 10-12 persons in each FGD have been conducted in Delhi-NCR in the following areas :

A Quiz Competition, (scripted, developed, and recorded in Hindi language, on Road Safety and Traffic Rules) was conducted after each Focus Group Discussion, and the 2 winners (who scored maximum marks with correct answers) were given token prizes such as Wallets, Mufflers, Scarves, Caps, Crayon sets, etc. The Quiz’s Question-Answers Sheets in Hindi were also distributed among the participants, at the end of the Quiz Competition.

Two Audio-Spots/Slogans were scripted, developed, and recorded in Hindi for Delhi-NCR, which were played after each Street Play, following which a Slogan Competition was conducted, and the best 2 Slogan-writers were given token Prizes, such as Wallets, Scarves, Mufflers, Crayons sets, etc. Also, feedbacks were taken from some of the audiences, who participated in the Slogan Competition.


III. SANTA CLAUS ACTIVITY


During Christmas Festival, on 23rd, 24th & 25th December, 2019, our Volunteers stood in various locations of Delhi, including Metro Stations, Market places, etc., holding the Placard with different public awareness messages on “Traffic and Road Safety” , who attracted men, women, and children by distributing Chocolates in their Santa Claus Dress, and interacting with people, giving road safety messages.


For this activity, Santa Claus Dresses for 10 Volunteers in Delhi were purchased and prior training was given to those Volunteers.

As part of the CSR Traffic & Road Safety Activity, a Colored Leaflet was designed, developed, with important information on “Two-Wheeler Vehicles Maintenance”, and 2,00,000 copies of the Coloured Leaflets were printed in Hindi, for distribution with various English, Hindi, Assamese, Malyalam and Telugu News papers in different parts of Delhi-NCR.



Approximately 4,00,000 readers were benefitted by the Leaflets with the useful information on Two-Wheeler Vehicles Maintenance, which were distributed through the various Newspapers in Delhi-NCR.

Feedbacks were also taken from some of the Slogan Contestants who participated in the Slogan Competition.

III. SANTA CLAUS ACTIVITY

III. LEAFLETS DISTRIBUTION IN NEWS PAPERS

As part of the CSR Traffic & Road Safety Activity, a Colored Leaflet in Telugu Language was designed, developed, with important information on “Two-Wheeler Vehicles Maintenance” for road safety; and 1,00,000 copies of the Coloured Leaflets were printed in Telugu , for distribution with various English, Urdu & Telugu News papers in different parts of Hyderabad.


Approximately 2,00,000 readers were benefitted by the important information on Two-Wheeler Vehicles Maintenance, provided in the Leaflets, which were distributed with the various Newspapers in Hyderabad during the project period.
